How we work

From first sketch to fifth-year aftercare

We work end-to-end on a small number of gardens each year. Our four-stage process keeps the vision intact from initial drawing to a fully grown garden.

01

Garden design

Every project begins with a thorough site survey and conversations about how you actually live. We translate that into bespoke concept drawings, technical plans and detailed planting schemes.

  • Site survey, soil analysis & drainage assessment
  • Concept drawings & mood boards
  • Technical plans, plant lists & specifications
  • Local authority consents where needed

Hard landscaping

Patios, paths, walls, steps, water features and structural planting beds. We use Indian sandstone, porcelain, granite setts, dry-stone walling and reclaimed brick — chosen to match the architecture and weather of the site.

  • Patios, paths & driveways
  • Walls, steps & retaining structures
  • Water features & ponds
  • Pergolas, arbours & outdoor kitchens

Soft landscaping

Specimen trees, herbaceous borders, hedging, lawns and meadows — chosen for the soil, the aspect, and the way the garden will be used in five and fifteen years' time. We grow much of our planting on at our nursery in Brailsford.

  • Specimen tree sourcing & planting
  • Herbaceous & mixed borders
  • Hedging, screening & topiary
  • Lawns, meadows & wildflower areas

Aftercare & maintenance

Every garden we build comes with a ten-year aftercare plan. Seasonal visits to keep your garden in the form it was designed to grow into — pruning, replanting, soil management, and adjustments as the design matures.

  • Seasonal pruning & bed maintenance
  • Lawn care & soil management
  • Plant health monitoring
  • Ten-year design integrity guarantee

About the studio

A small team. A short list of clients. A long view.

Heritage Gardens was founded in 1997 by David Whitfield in a barn outside Brailsford. We've stayed deliberately small ever since — a team of seven who design, build and tend each garden ourselves.

We take on around eight commissions a year, working closely with each client from first survey to fifth-year aftercare. The result is gardens that grow into themselves, looking better at year five than they did at handover.

What our clients say

★★★★★

From the first site visit to the final planting, David and the team were a pleasure to work with. The patio they built three winters ago looks better than the day they laid it.

Outstanding work from start to finish. The new patio is exactly what we hoped for and the team were professional throughout. Would recommend without hesitation.

Heritage redesigned our whole garden — borders, paving, the lot. Five years on and the planting they specified is exactly as they said it would mature. Worth every penny.
